The Why Files #24

Excerpts from my own Why Files

Rachel* was nine.  It was Mother's Day weekend coming up, and she shyly handed me a Mother's Day card.  I wish I could say I took it graciously.  I mean, I was gracious to her, thanking her and everything, but honestly my reaction was "I'm 22, and you think I'm old enough to be your mom!"  Crazy what vanity does.

But later I ran into her school teacher and she explained a few things to me.

"Rachel's back in foster care, only there's no families for her age group, so they've got her and her sister in a hotel room with a room supervisor.  Other than visits to the hotel swimming pool, they've pretty much only seen the walls of their room these last few weeks.  Her mom's declared she doesn't want the girls, and her dad's AWOL, so they're stuck there for the time being.  When we made Mother's Day cards in class, she asked if she could make hers for you, instead.  Did you get it?"

Ummm... yeah.  And it just became a priceless treasure.
