My grandfather passed away last week. We went to Vancouver to celebrate his life and mourn his passing. Our family had been terribly hurt by the church throughout the years, and while grandpa, along with a few members of the family, was a Christian, the family had a hard time agreeing on who would perform the funeral and where. There was too much baggage with the church.
In the end they agreed on a pastor they had known as a boy. He was evangelical, he was connected to the family, and neither he nor his church held bad associations for anyone in the family.
This church's testimony was beautiful. Not only did the pastor agree, but he offered their church to hold the ceremony. His congregation offered to serve a meal afterwards. His wife offered childcare. Not one person from the funeral was in any way a participant or member of this church, but they opened their arms and welcomed us.
For a family that carries bitterness, regret, pain and heartache from a church, what a healing blessing this particular church was, and what a powerful testimony of Christ.
Thanks, church.
