Today was a mixture of good & bad.
The bad news is, another girl in our community died this week. Jeanette Malcolm, age 12, committed suicide. Her funeral was on the 6th. Pray for us, her family & the community as you never get used to children dying. Suicide is a big issue in our community. It was just over a year ago that her good friend, also 12 at the time, committed suicide as well.
Today was also our first staff meeting of 2007, and we spent some time praising God for the good things that has happened this last year. For every point of despair, there is a point of hope, and here are some shining lights:
- David, the first teen to graduate from high school during my 5 year involvement in the inner city
- April, a grade 9 student who graduated from our jr high school, is one of the top 4 finalists in an international poetry contest. See http://www.poetry.com/Publications/display.asp?ID=P8236346&BN=999&PN=1 for her poem.
Stronger local leaders & involvement than ever:
- Vanessa, local teen hired 4 hours a week to do programming for our children's club.
- Mathew, local teen hired 20 hours/week to work with 5-8 year olds in a boy's Bible club: his vision, his initiative, he is fundraising his salary, and he will be starting this in February. (If you want to donate to his support, click on the ICYA link for opportunities!)
- summer VBS: relied (for the first time ever) entirely on local teens to run a bigger-than-ever summer program (we usually hire up to 6 suburban college students to run this).
