I am so encouraged! We started our Day Camps this week, and just finished DAY 2 and it feels FANTASTIC! This, being our first week running, and also with 1/2 the staff as we will have next week, we were prepared for 50 children, but hoping for more like 30 to give us a chance to make our mistakes with a little more grace! It's oru first year running VBS with this format: we start the morning at 10:00am, have singing and a skit to start with, then move to crafts, storytime and games before lunch. After lunch we have a cool outtrip, like going to a museum or swimming. We have 29 kids this week - and all but 2 came early today (you can earn extra points for your team by being on time!). We also, in the past, have struggled especially with the boys as it seems many conventional kids clubs do not hold their attention. Today I was sitting with Mark, a 12 year old with a reputation for trouble making, and he asked if he could come back next week again. I laughed and told him we were doing the same thing next week, so he would just be bored. "No way," he told me earnestly, "I'm having WAY too much fun to ever be bored! I could do it all over again!" That was great to hear!
Our theme is a racetrack theme (so, yes, we have Team Honda, Team Ford, Team VW and Team Dodge competing for the title), and we are learning about the race of life, and how God wants us to race. We put a band together and for the first time that I can remember, kids are actually enjoying the praise and worship time (or maybe they're just stunned...) The story times are so much fun and the kids are responding to learning about Namaan and Jonah, and the outtrips are really something to look forward to at the end of the day.
Thanks so much for those of you praying for us - its working! (Also thanks to Interstate Batteries for donating some cool racing t-shirts... they are a great incentive for kids to behave so they can "earn cars" that will let them win one at the end of the week!) We could continue to use your prayers as we sign kids up for next week already, for the SERVE team & leaders as they are getting tired (its week 3 for them already), for swimming passes (or $$ for ONE missing outtrip for next week) and that through this all, GOD will be the focus and goal of this race!
NOTE: Thanks for praying! 75 swim passes came in the mail today, so we are set to go for next week!
