Mondays have become my "flex day" - the only day I am around after school hours and not committed elsewhere. It is interesting how this day gets filled up: I have brought a 14 year old to get her first bank account (it takes some doing to find a place that will let her not only put money in, but also take money out without a parent signature. Her parents were unwilling to come to a bank for the required signature, so we had to hunt for a place that would let her have a bank account autonomous of parental involvement). Last Monday our house was filled with 9 girls, ages 5-11, where we made caramel apples, read a story together, and played games, and asked questions like, "How can you be a Christian if you don't where a skirt?" and if it's okay to celebrate Hallowe'en. Today I am helping a 16 year old get her SIN and help her finish her resume as she looks for her first job, and next week I've promised the same nine girls they can come back and we'll learn to make "something healthy for cheap" as we are realizing these ten year olds are often the ones feeding the family, with little resources. We'll see how that goes!
I am enjoying these flexible days and find myself looking forward to what Mondays will bring. I'm also encouraged that, aside from prepared devotions, girls are beginning to come with questions about the Bible and Christianity and we can create a safe place to look into what the Bible actually says.
