The craziness of my summer season has ended early enough for me to enjoy the last few weeks of my favourite part of the year. VBS is still running, but by capable summer staff. Camp is still taking 15 children per week, and canoe trips bring another 4 teens out of the city each week, and both are fully staffed with summer staff and volunteers. Drop-in is still providing high-energy fun for children and teens in the evenings, but is in great hands with Keith & Lori so I find myself sitting back a little to drink it all in. It has been a good summer.
Yesterday I was sharing lunch with a table of 5 year olds in our VBS programs: one of the boys, seemingly out of nowhere, shouted to his fellows "Who thinks Jesus is nice?" which followed by a bunch of hands waving in the air. My colleague and I had to hide smiles as this 'normal' conversation returned just as easily to the benefits of Spiderman vs. Superman.
Today two of the teenagers I just spent the last month with in leadership training showed up at our centre to see if there was anything they could help with. So the three of us took a truck out to Steinbach to pick up donations for our garage sale fundraiser. It may not be much, but the simple sight of their willingness to carry boxes for no reason except to help is a big change from anything I would have seen even a month ago.
Well, this site is a bit of a test to see if it would be worth keeping up. We'll just have to see!
